This stage demands what short bursts of effort cannot buy: supervising doctoral candidates through to their defence, leading ministry-level projects, and enough standing in the field to secure assessments from external experts.

✓Take on doctoral candidates as principal supervisor and see them through to their defence

✓Lead at least one ministry-level or higher research project

✓Publish in top-tier journals, not merely enough of them

✓Teaching books edited as lead editor

✓Build standing beyond your own institution: reviewing, panels, international collaboration
